How To Deal With Anxiety Without Medication-Steps To Improving Communication Skills

How To Deal With Anxiety Without Medication

I wish to share methods which has helped me communicate better in social situations, please do not get me wrong people with anxiety issues are very able to communicate and usually have very good communication skills. The problems for us is  when we are in social situations we are not ourselves and communicating often is a challenge, the reason for this is what I refer to as temporary brain dead. Another term the older generation used  was to be tongue tied, we are just so uncomfortable in social situations our anxiety prevents us from being able to communicate very well. We are not rude or bad mannered people, in fact the majority of anxious people are better mannered then many people with little  anxiety.

Social Media

Social media is the first step I suggest for you to learn to improve your communication skills, social media is a very good start just because most people dealing with problems conversing in social situations usually are much better and less anxious conversing online. Online gives us more time to consider what we wish to share with another person or a group of people, another reason I highly recommend this as step one is because most of the people on your social media websites are family and friends. We all are more comfortable conversing with family and friends then complete strangers, so open up your social media profile and start practicing your communication skills. Facebook is the most popular social media website today for communicating with your family and friends, its free so nothing is stopping you but yourself.

Since your on facebook now, check out the group pages and join some groups which will be your next step to becoming more comfortable communicating with people. This is a great next step for you, join groups which you have a passion for in your life. Weather its gardening, exercising or reading mystery books this will be a big step for you. Groups are not as anxious for you since its something you have a passion for, plus more likely you know a whole lot about this subject. You will find groups to be a great confident booster for your self-esteem, I promise you will make some very good friends through these groups but you must put in your time and share on these group pages to make friends. I highly recommend your search for groups with people dealing with their own anxiety issues, if not on facebook  just do a google search foranxiety groups“, you will be amazed how many groups exists and people just like you.

Pen Pal’s

Pen pals are another great method to become more comfortable communicating with people, plus pen pals you learn so much about people in other countries and other cultures its quite a learning experience. I have made some very good friendships over the years through these websites, even though some people through these websites come and go I have a few who have been very close friends for many years. You can develop very close relationships through online communication, so if you are interested in becoming friends with people in other countries and cultures this is a very good method to do.

Final Thought

If your one who goes brain dead or tongue tied when your out and about when meeting new people, I really hope you will start giving these websites a try. At first you might be a little anxious, face it anything we experience new makes us uncomfortable. That is just how we are made, my experience has been amazing using these websites to learn to be more comfortable talking to people when I am out and about. It will become almost natural for you when someone engages in conversation with you, you will not have to think what to say or not to say. The words will just pop out naturally from your mouth, now would that not make your life so much better and less anxious when you go out and about.

  2. Hi Jeff,
Some great ideas there on improving your real life communication skills by practicing them on social media networks. I think that is awesome for everyone.
Pen pals is a lovely idea too. I remember doing this a lot when I was a kid. But I think with the invention of the internet and emails and social networks we sort of lost this skill of writing letters.

Pen pals, is something that you heard a lot of when I was growing up. but that was a long time ago. Maybe the on-line social media has taken over. That was a refreshing idea. When you think about it, just talking on the phone is getting a bit old fashioned as well, isn’t it? Wow, how things change. Great ideas though on communicating, thanks, Jim.
