What You Need To Know About Your Teenager

Being a parent of a teenager is probably the most difficult time for all parents, so many teenagers are experiencing emotional feelings they are struggling to understand themselves. The majority of teenagers are experiencing anxiety and social difficulties at this time in their lives, so many teenagers will avoid being with the family simply because they are not feeling comfortable being social at this time. As a parent, the best thing you can do for your teenager is to be supportive and be available for them if they ever need to talk to you, so many teenagers avoid sharing with their parents in fear of their parents becoming angry and not understanding them.

What Can You Do As A Parent?

The holidays are often difficult for many parents and teenagers alike; you are suppose to spend time during the holidays with family and friends having a good time. Most parents are confused about what they really should do, you will not do well to force your teenager to participate in the family activities and yet you are afraid to allow them to just isolate in their rooms?

What is recommended for parents to do to get their teenagers involved in the holidays is to include them in helping you make some decisions of what the family will do, there is one strategy which works very well for the majority of teenagers and that is to make the activities a competition between the entire family.

Holiday Bedroom Decorating Contest

One activity which works well to get the ball rolling way before the holidays even begins is to announce a bedroom decorating contest between the family, you will find many teenagers will like this idea because it allows them to decorate their room in any way they desire. Of course you will have to sit down as a family and discuss the rules, and when you allow your teenager to be involved in making the rules, they will be more excited about participating in the contest. Coming up with a prize which will be something your teenager will be interested in will motivate them to win this family holiday contest, so what would be a prize your teenager would not be able to resist entering the bedroom decorating contest?

Christmas Decorations

Another way to get the entire family in the holiday mood is to get everyone in the family to contribute homemade decorations, so maybe your family decides they are going to have nothing but homemade decorations for the house and the tree this year? Everyone will keep their decorations a secret until it is time for the family to decorate the home and the tree together, and what teenager wants to be showed up by their younger siblings?

Many families today don’t decorate together like in the past, I have found that the mother does the majority of the decorating in most families. Maybe you could talk your teenager in being in charge of putting up the Christmas tree if you use an artificial tree, and by giving your teenager projects to do to get ready for the holidays might just get them in the mood? Teenagers are like everyone else and want to feel they area useful and serving a purpose, so by giving them some projects to be in charge of you are giving them the feelings of being a grown up.

Christmas Movie Marathons

Finding ways for your teen to be involved with the holiday activities will keep their minds busy on other things and not be feeling as anxious and depressed, you could allow your teenager to assist in choosing the movies for the marathon? Most teenagers know more about the best movies available than many of their parents, you just ask them to choose a variety of movies which will be suitable for all members of the family.

What about the movie snacks, you could have your children choose the snacks for the movie marathon together? If your teenager is into preparing snacks and treats, you could put them in charge of the other children making the movie goodies, and these are simple and easy methods to get your teenager involved in the holiday activities.

Adopt A Soldier For Christmas

Your family could together adopt a soldier for Christmas which would help everyone get into the holiday mood, and your entire family could shop for the solider. You could go shopping as a family for the soldier or allow your teenager to shop for the soldier on their own, this is another natural skill teenagers have and enjoy shopping at the malls?

Whenever you are doing something special for someone else you will rarely feel depressed, you always feel warm and happy inside when you are doing something for another person without having too? The soldier you adopt would be experiencing a special Christmas all because of your family, and even if it is too late this year your family can start planning this project for next year?

If your family does not usually host a Christmas party maybe this can be a new tradition your teenager can start, you should consider starting to play holiday music early in the home to get the entire family in the mood and especially for your teenager.

What Is On My Mind Today?

Parents best strategy with teenagers is to find ways to get them involved with the family during the holidays, you should start treating your teenager like young adults and allowing them to be a part of planning the family activities during the holidays? By providing projects for your teenager they will be thinking less about the things bothering them which will prevent them from being as anxious and depressed, so many teenagers experience depression during the holidays and avoid participating in the family activities.

I like a lot of those activities you mentioned in your post. Having s movie marathon and snowball fight sound very fun in my opinion. Even building snowman is also a great activity.

Have you ever built a gingerbread house? That is one activity I want to try and do with my wife.

Even though I am no longer a teenager at twenty-one, I still found your article useful. I have three nieces and nephews in their teens who I am going to visit over the Holidays. Your advice will help me pry them away from their phones so I can get to know them better.

I do have a question though. As a college student, I cannot afford the greatest gifts for them. What would you recommend as an inexpensive gift? Thank you in advance and I hope you have a great day!

    • admin says:

      Thank You

I appreciate your reading my article and commenting today, I wish you much luck with your college education. It all depends on the ages of your nieces and nephews what gifts are good options for you, but video games are high on most children’s Xmas list if this helps ?

I love some of these ideas, especially the adopt a soldier one. This would not only give a teenager something to work towards, but maybe foster a culture of helping and giving at such an impressionable age. The snowball fight would probably help in easing some of that tension that most teenagers experience in this time of life. Love the post and all the ideas here!
